Death by exile

34/50 {Vivien Leigh}

Vivien Leigh in the 1930’s.

Vivien is a warm-hearted person when you get to know her; loyal and loveable, hiding behind a fence of dignity when she feels shy. She’s a curious mixture of affection, sympathy and elusiveness that can be wholly delightful most of the time, and quite maddening some of the time.

Her sensitivity still bruises easily, like a child’s. By contrast the sophistication she once assumed has become part of her personality strengthened now by a better balanced sense of humour and gaiety.

But behind all this there is one streak to the Leigh make-up, a silver of metal so fine that only those who know her best are aware of it. It’s her steely determination.

Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh

Shortly before Laurence Olivier passed away, he was seen by a friend watching a film on television starring his ex wife, Vivien Leigh. With tears in his eyes, he said: “This, this was love“

I hope I’ve one thing that Scarlett never had. A sense of humor. I want some joy out of life. And she had one thing I hope I never have. Selfish egotism.
